New Delhi: Prefilled syringes are becoming increasing popular in drug delivery systems because of their ease of use and enhanced safety. Going forward, they are expected to see a further rise in demand which would result in high volumes in the prefilled syringes market.

A recent research study by Fact.MR, a Dublin based market research firm, on the prefilled syringes market finds that it would rise at an impressive 9.1 percent CAGR between 2017 and 2026 to clock a value of US$11 billion by the end of 2026.

In order to make the most of the growing demand, manufacturers are coming up with more evolved versions of prefilled syringes. A case in point is the PosiFlush developed by Becton Dickinson which contains 4 percent sodium citrate lock solution that can reduce the number of catheters for hemodialysis by about 59 percent thus minimizing risks. Innovations such as these are constantly reshaping the contours of the prefilled syringes market.

At present, prefilled syringes made of glass is raking up maximum revenue in the market. Their sales are expected to surpass U$ 7.5 Billion by end of 2026 in the prefilled syringes market. Nevertheless, their fragility has crimped their uptake to an extent. It has also egged manufacturers in the prefilled syringes market to come up with polymer-based versions of the product that do not break easily or react with the drug they carry.

Hospitals are the most prominent distribution channel in the prefilled syringes market. Sale of both glass and polymer-based products from hospitals is estimated to reach a value of over US$ 6.5 Billion by 2026-end. Other distribution channels such as online pharmacies and specialty clinics are also expected to gain traction in the prefilled syringes market in the years to come.

Conventional prefilled syringes are seeing greater demand compared to safety prefilled syringes at present. In the near term, however, sales of safety prefilled syringes is expected to gain pace. North America is a leading region in the prefilled syringes market. It has been seeing high sales volume, particularly in the U.S. where instances of chronic disorders are alarmingly high.

Asia Pacific excluding Japan (APEJ) has also made its mark in the global prefilled syringes market. A fast expanding pharmaceutical industry and the large population in India and China are driving sales in the region. What has also helped is the large population of elderly.
