New Delhi: The Department of Biotechnology has joined hands with The Research Foundation, Flanders (FWO) a public utility organization, which supports fundamental and strategic research to promote and develop the possibilities of scientific co-operation between research institutions in India and Flanders. (Flanders today normally refers to the Dutch-speaking northern portion of Belgium
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 2nd May 2016 by Ambassador of India to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg, Manjeev Singh Puri for cooperation in the field of biotechnology with Flemish Minister for Employment, Economy, Innovation and Sports Philippe Muyters. Mr Puri also signed a letter of intent with Filip Boelaert, secretary-general of the Flanders Department of Mobility and Public Works.
The MoU is a framework agreement encouraging research institutions in India and universities and their counterparts in Flanders to develop scientific collaboration looking at promoting development of long-term cooperation in different areas of the field.
This new handshake can facilitate joint collaboration on specific topics of mutual interest for India and Flanders in biotech in which such cooperation is desirable. It will take into account the experience which the scientists and specialists of India and Flanders have gained and the possibilities available.
The co-operation may include the exchange of information (but not any confidential information which the contracting parties are not free to disclose) and also the exchange of scientists and technicians, training of young scientists as well as the joint execution of scientific research and development projects. Besides, it may involve joint seminars, symposiums and workshops covering fields agreed upon by the participant institutions in advance.
To raise the bar of output, the MoU insists on high scientific standard and a scientific benefit quotient for all collaborative activities. Besides, each collaborative activity should be significant from scientific point of view and as a bilateral co-operative project performed on a basis of mutuality and equality.
